The Difference between PR, Gifting and Collaborations

The Difference between PR, Gifting and Collaborations

Hi babes,

I’M BACK! It’s been a minute, but I’m committed to being consistent in this space again. This week’s topic was requested by a podcast listener, so we wanted to deep dive into the differences for anyone who isn’t sure or just wants more clarification.

PR vs. Gifting vs. Collaboration

A general breakdown of each and the differences between the three…

PR

  • A little more random

  • Can happen when a brand launches a new product - want product visibility

  • You are on a recurring list

  • Very common for beauty brands

  • Unpaid, no strings attached

  • No contract involved

  • How to get on the list: reach out to a brand at pitch like normal and you can mention / ask if they have a PR list that you would love to be added

  • Is it worth it? YES - start to build the relationship with the brand

  • I personally wouldn’t accept anything I don’t see myself using

Gifting

  • A brand reaches out to your OR you reach out to the brand

  • Gifting should typically have NO strings attached aka NO posting requirements

  • IF you are just starting out, gifting is a good way to start a relationship

  • No contract involved

  • IMO: You should share the brand at least on stories or tagged in post if you wear / use the item

    • I don’t see the point in accepting gifting if you aren’t trying to build the relationship?

  • Some brands may try to take advantage here - they want a “test post” BE AWARE, stay away from that.

  • You can always say: I’d love to do gifting but I can’t require any dedicated posting just to be transparent with the brand

Collaboration

  • Where the $$$ is

  • Pitch yourself or a brand reaches out to you

  • Required deliverables

  • You should be charging a rate

  • Ask them for their timeline, usage, etc - you can charge for these things

  • This is your dedicated posts

  • The main goal for partnerships

  • Building long term relationships to turn into long term paid partnerships

Hopefully this breakdown helps you decipher the differences if you were confused or unsure!

Xx, Allysa
