Tips on Starting out as a Social Media Creator

Tips on Starting out as a Social Media Creator

Hi babes,

Excited to be back with another blog post focusing on tips when starting out as a new social media content creator. I wish I knew a lot of this information when I started out, so I’m happy to be able to share this all with you.

This information is great even if you’re past the beginner stage as well. These tips are good refreshers and good reminders to go back to the basics if you’re ever struggling.

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

Let’s dive in!

  • Test and see what works best for you

    • Style, aesthetic, niche etc

    • What may work for someone else might not work for you

  • Test different social media platforms

    • Instagram

    • Tiktok

    • Youtube

    • Pinterest

    • You might like a certain type of content more

When I started out, tiktok wasn’t a “thing” so it’s really cool to have options now as to what platform you want to prioritize

  • Build an authentic audience

    • Focus on who you have

      • engage in your comments

      • comment on their profile

    • Remove bots & creepy men - your engagement is more important the following

      • These types of followers will only hurt, especially down the road. Get rid of them ASAP!

    • How the algorithm works:

      • You post on Instagram and the algorithm shows it to a small part of your audience

      • based on the engagement received by that small group, the algorithm decides how much more to push your post

      • If your audience is made up of bots, they are not going to engage and the algorithm will not continue to push your post resulting in lower engagement

    • NEVER buy followers (it’s very obvious when someone does)

  • Pitch brands you want to work with

    • Don’t sit and wait - email brands when you feel ready!

    • Brands value smaller / micro creators

    • Similar aesthetic? Audience?

    • What can you provide the brand? Content Creation? Drive sales?

  • Accept gifting if it aligns with your brand

    • It’s ok to start off brand relationships with gifting. I still do that today!!

    • You can always ask for a discount code and show them how you can drive sales

    • Unboxing, stories, tagged with other brands in a post

  • Don’t let people tell you the industry is “oversaturated”

    • Yes there may be more people, but there are also way more opportunities

  • Consistency on social media platforms

    • Figure out what you can handle and stick with it

    • Consistency is key

    • Ex. 3x a week, Mon Wed Fri, post at 8am

    • The more specific you can be, the better!

  • Quality over quantity

    • Focus on high quality content

      • Good lighting, not blurry, clean backgrounds

      • You want brands to want to repost you

  • Batch content

    • Shoot multiple looks at a time to be efficient

    • Find locations that do well for you and keep them in the rotation

  • Niche down

    • Pick 3 words to describe what you want to focus on

    • Doing too much at the beginning can cause confusion with your audience

    • Once you establish an audience, then you can branch out more into other things

  • Multiple streams of income

    • If you want to eventually be full time, think about different streams of income

    • We have an entire podcast episode on this!!!

    • Read my blog post HERE

  • There will be highs and lows

    • Whether it’s the algorithm or engagement, there will be ups and downs.

    • If you love it, stick with it, it always gets better

    • Use the low times to test different strategies

  • Meet people IRL if you can!

    • Bloggers in your area - reach out and get coffee

    • Helps you get more confident/shoot more/try new things/meet new people/etc.

    • Meet up with girls at events

  • So many opportunities in this industry

    • Brand trips

    • Collaboration with dream brands

    • Gifting from dream brands

    • Networking

    • NYFW

    • Blogger trips (our trips lol)

    • Brand edits

Hopefully these tips can help you if you’re just starting out or even if you’ve been doing this awhile! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below

Xx, Allysa
